We are currently accepting nominations for the 26th Annual Providencia Award. This award is given annually to a local business, organization or individual based on their extraordinary contributions (i.e. expansion of facilities, new events and outstanding business levels) to the vitality and prosperity of The Palm Beaches as a tourist destination. Providencia Award applications and more information can be found on Discover The Palm Beaches’ website, and must be submitted to no later than Friday, March 17, 2017. The Breakers Oceanfront Seafood Bar is Now Open

After a four-month long ‘reimagining’ of its interior space, The Breakers Seafood Bar has reopened. The renovation features modern nautical-theme-inspired interiors. The Winter Equestrian Festival Booming County Tourism

The Winter Equestrian Festival opened this month and is bringing more than just horses and riders to Wellington. More than 200,000 spectators are expected to attend the 12-week-long festival, generating an estimated 119,000 nightly bookings at local hotels and short-term vacation rentals. Pumping roughly $110 million into the county’s economy, the festival is the top sporting event in the county, in terms of total economic impact. Tourism officials say the economic boost it brings to the region is on par with the Super Bowl. Click here to read more.

FAU’s Hospitality Management Program Making Waves in the Industry

Dr. Peter Ricci was featured in January’s Hotel Business Magazine. FAU is highlighted as a “game changer” among the top 30 Hospitality Programs. Their program has 800 students per semester and its MBA in Hospitality & Tourism Management is a pure MBA with the complement of additional credit hours mixed in that are hospitality business specific. Palm Beach County Ranked 3rd in the State for Room Inventory Growth.

  • From January to December 2016, Room Inventory Growth was 3.5%, 3rd in the State; Room nights sold has grown by 2.3%, ranking 5th in the State (up from 10th – Jan.-Dec. 2015); Occupancy was 72.2%; ADR was $167; and RevPAR was $121.

For the Month of January:

  • Room nights sold decreased by 1.5%
  • RevPAR was $158
  • ADR was $205
  • Occupancy was 77%
  • Room Inventory Growth was 1.2%

New Hire:

Amanda Joy has joined us as the Account Executive, Convention Sales. She was most recently with the Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society as Membership Manager where she was responsible for developing and implementing strategies for acquiring new members and communicating with existing members.  Prior to that she was with Wildlife Trading Company as Store Manager with overall operations responsibilities servicing the Palm Beach Zoo.

She will be providing sales support to Dori Jensen and Peggy Murray Hagaman

New Hire:

Lauren Harris has joined us as the Account Executive, Group Sales. She joins us from Redevelopment Management Associates – an organization providing urban planning and development advisory services to cities and towns where she was a Business Attraction & Marketing Coordinator.  In her role, she was responsible for executing all marketing efforts for the community redevelopment agency in Margate, FL including business attraction, retention, and community events.  Prior to moving back home to the area Lauren spent five years working at the Asheville Convention & Visitors Bureau where she held several roles including Administrative Assistant, Sales and Service Coordinator and Data Specialist managing their database.
She will be providing sales support to Connie Hunter and Susan Carlson.

Leisure Sales
The Leisure Sales Team kicked the new year off by attending Florida Huddle in Orlando. Hosted by Visit Florida at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, this appointment tradeshow connects Florida suppliers with hundreds of domestic and international tour operators and wholesalers. With over 775 attendees, both Eda Ruddock and Rodrigo Trujillo successfully connected with existing partners and met with potential buyers interested specifically in Palm Beach County.    

Eda Ruddock, Director of Leisure Sales for Domestic and Canadian markets closed out the month of January with a sales mission to Washington DC to promote the destination and educate Travel Agents about what’s new and upcoming in the Palm Beaches. The development of The Ballpark of The Palm Beaches, home to spring training for the Washington Nationals, was highlighted. 

Marketing and Public Relations News

This month, the Public Relations department collectively hosted five agency representatives from Development Counselors International and Hills Balfour, with the help and support of community partners. The team also hosted five media representatives from various outlets including, New York Times Travel Magazine China, Parade, Canada’s Tourism Plus, Let’s Talk Live (ABC affiliate in DC)/ DC Refined, and (DC) Beacon Newspapers.

The Public Relations department hosted its first ever Bloggers Day in Boca Raton, working with four Miami-based bloggers: Christina Nicholson of Mascara Maven, Ria Acosta of #LiveLikeRia, Ky Jade of KySoChic and Claudia Garcia of Becky Boricua. The group promoted tourism partners on Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook and Twitter.

In support of DTPB’s Friends Trust Friends Campaign, a socially-driven marketing campaign, the Public Relations department is seeking the support of community partners and locals in sharing their favorite moments, offerings and memories of The Palm Beaches, by using the official hashtag (#ThePalmBeaches) when connecting with us via social media.

Also, in efforts to influence visitation growth in our International markets, the PR team is seeking international-specific travel deals for key market (Canada, UK and Brazil). If you’d like to submit an offer we ask that the offer be available for a minimum of six months. Offers can be submitted to
