Explore the life and history of sea turtles this nesting season, May - Oct.
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (March 19, 2015) - Discover The Palm Beaches invites visitors to get up close and personal with the region's first known tourists- Loggerhead, Leatherback and Green sea turtles - with a variety of turtle-tastic activities and excursions offered throughout the destination.
Sea turtles are The Palm Beaches' most loyal visitors, returning year after year for nesting season, May - Oct. Travelers can enjoy close-up encounters with these extraordinary animals, as well as nesting tours offered at various marine and nature centers and diving adventures that journey into their natural habitat.
Loggerhead Marinelife Center, an ocean conservation organization and sea turtle hospital located in Juno Beach, is one of the most important sea turtle nesting beaches in the world, featuring free admission and hosting 215,000 visitors each year. Not only does the Center serve as a sea turtle rehabilitation hospital, but the staff also organizes specialty tours to see these gentle giants coming to nest.
Loggerhead Marinelife Center also hosts Turtlefest, an annual family-friendly free admission event that brings conservation-minded visitors together for educational presentations, games and activities, food and music. The event also includes a Global Village where guests can tour seven regions of the world, learning about the species of sea turtles native to each. This year's event is set to take place on March 28.
The pristine beaches of John D. MacArthur Beach State Park are ideal for sea turtle nests. Park rangers offer an array of turtle habits and habitat presentations and guided nesting observation tours. The park's gift shop is fully stocked with sea turtle inspired items and souvenirs.
Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, a unique cooperative project of the City of Boca Raton, Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District, Florida Atlantic University (FAU), and Friends of Gumbo Limbo, hosts valuable environmental programs for children, adults and families, as well as sea turtle themed activities and events. Programs include sea turtle summer camps, turtle walks, hatchling release observations and free outdoor marine feedings.
Pura Vida Divers is accustomed to sea turtle adventures, and takes divers down to visit their habitats, year-round. In addition to the Loggerhead, Leatherback, and Green sea turtles that nest on the shores of The Palm Beaches, divers will also see Hawksbill and Kemp's Ridley turtles that migrate to the region for mating season.
