Glen Ridge

As one of Palm Beach County’s smallest towns, peaceful Glen Ridge is primarily residential — and, no doubt, big on avian appreciation. Doubling as a fascinating bird sanctuary, the tiny Florida enclave near Cloud Lake is home to many winged creatures (think starlings, yellow-billed cuckoos, blue-gray gnatcatchers, and storks) along with its fewer than 250 full-time human residents.

See Glen Ridge’s blue-green Gem Lake from a wooden dock for lush inland water views surrounded by verdant greens and slender, swaying palms. Walk amongst the trees and fragrant flowers to spot colorful birdies in their natural domain.

Just 15 minutes away by car is another Palm Beach County birder gem — Green Cay Nature Center and Wetlands in Boynton Beach. Similar in size to cozy Glen Ridge, it overlooks 100 acres of wetland habitat that teems with local birds and has its own alligator hole. There’s also a mile and a half of elevated boardwalk peppered with interpretive signs with facts about Green Cay’s striking natural environment. Head into the sun-filled nature center to learn about south Florida’s wetlands with exhibits featuring real-live animals.

History

Developed and then officially incorporated in the 1940s, Glen Ridge is thought to be named for its location on the West Palm Beach Canal.
