National Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrations in The Palm Beaches

National Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrations in The Palm Beaches

National Hispanic Heritage Month is recognized each year across the United States from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, including in The Palm Beaches.

From marveling at art exhibits to patronizing locally owned businesses, there are many ways to celebrate the contributions and influences of the Hispanic and Latinx communities in The Palm Beaches throughout the year — but don’t miss out on these festive and educational events in September and October.

In West Palm Beach, Clematis by Night, the popular Thursday evening concert series, will host a National Hispanic Heritage Month performance featuring Tempo Sonoro Band. On Thursday, Sept. 16 from 6 to 9 p.m., downtown’s Waterfront Commons will come alive with the sounds of salsa, son montuno (mountain sound) and Latin jazz performed by this 11-piece ensemble. They’re one of the best big salsa bands in Florida, so bring your blankets and chairs, grab a drink and a bite to eat, and enjoy the show as the sun sets.

In Delray Beach, Arts Garage is hosting a celebration of music and culture featuring Latin Grammy-winning jazz saxophonist Dr. Ed Calle on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 8 p.m. Calle is a five-time Grammy nominee and won the 2015 Latin Grammy for Best Instrumental Album. He has been featured on more than 1,200 albums and 9,000 singles with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Celia Cruz, Gloria Estefan, Rihanna and many more big names. Performing alongside his band of some of South Florida’s best studio musicians, Calle will play a blend of smooth jazz, Afro-Cuban jazz and new songs. You can buy tickets here.

Another exciting performance on Sept. 18, The Wick Theatre & Costume Museum in Boca Raton presents “Viva La Vida! Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month” featuring internationally renowned vocalist Daniella Mass. Originally from Colombia, Mass was a finalist on “America’s Got Talent” and also starred in the Wick’s production of “Evita.” She will give two performances, one at 2 p.m. and another at 8 p.m., featuring powerful renditions of classics such as “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” and “La Llorona.” Tickets are available online.   Non-profit community organization Latin Quarter West Palm Beach will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a car parade and outdoor festival Saturday, Oct. 9 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The parade starts at Forest Hill High School and ends at Phipps Baseball Park, where the free festival will kick off featuring live music, food, dancing, games, prizes and more. Individuals and groups can register online in advance of the event.

The city of Boynton Beach will continue the region’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations into November with its Hispanic Heritage Night on Friday, Nov. 12 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Boynton Beach Arts & Cultural Center. This free event will feature music and cuisine from different Latin American countries, and guests are encouraged to bring their dancing shoes.

Looking for a virtual option? The Palm Beach County Library System is hosting nearly a month of virtual events starting Sept. 8. The roster of workshops features options for all ages including cooking classes, traditional arts and crafts, bilingual story time and sessions on Hispanic and Latinx history and figures. It’s easy to pre-register online and attend via Zoom. In addition to the online courses, the library has curated Hispanic Heritage Month reading lists for adults and kids in English, as well as a list of titles in Spanish.
