Business Intelligence Internship

Business Intelligence gathers an extensive database of research on destination performance and future trends. The wealth of accumulated data has the potential to uncover new insights, improve decision making and resource allocation to grow the tourism economy. This is a tremendous opportunity for an individual interested in developing their analytical skills while gaining exposure to internal operations of a Destination Marketing Organization. By generating valuable insights, a successful internship will make a significant contribution to the Palm Beach County tourism economy. To achieve this, the Business Intelligence Intern will be exposed to current reports and analytics and challenged to enhance insights and communication gleaned from those reports and other data sources. Major responsibilities include:

  • Deep dive analysis of current data sets
  • Data collection for ongoing and new research projects.
  • Development of one major research initiative based on the knowledge gained.

The goal is to gain valuable experience while aiding the Business Intelligence department to better organize, analyze and communicate research.
This position will be exposed to many faucets of business intelligence, market research and tourism industries. An internship in Business Intelligence would have two major components:

  • Exposure to current daily activities. Interns will be exposed to the on-going research projects conducted and learn the steps required to create them. This would include hands on experience with the analysis of data sets and report production.
  • Lead a research project. After exposure to current projects and data sets, interns will be expected to lead a primary research project from start to finish.

WEEKS 1 - 4
The following Business Intelligence projects will be part of the guided learning and developing internship curriculum.

  • Hotel Performance Dashboard
  • Visitation Dashboard
  • Quarterly Performance Reports
  • A primary research project such as the collateral conversion, brand tracker, resident awareness, meeting planner satisfaction, or travel trade knowledge studies

WEEKS 5 - 8
After exposure to standardized reporting one of the following potential projects will be assigned for the next phase of the curriculum. This project will be managed and seen through completion by the Business Intelligence Intern with the guidance of the Director of Business Intelligence.

  • Development of attribution and ROI models for DTPB activities
  • Analyze current datasets to derive new insights
  • Creation of infographic for communication of key insights

Other additional tasks or projects may be required as part of the second phase. Examples of these are listed below.

  • Gathering secondary research
  • Organizing data and reports
  • Conducting on-going analysis
  • Help support internal and external stakeholders in research needs


  • This internship requires an individual with a highly analytical background. The successful candidate will be results-oriented, self-directed and well organized.  This person should have the ability to establish and shift priorities in a dynamic environment and possess at a minimum, the following qualifications:
    • A student with a background in statistics, marketing and/or hospitality.
    • Strong desire for hands-on learning in the travel, tourism and hospitality industry
    • Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
    • Excellent computer literacy with experience using Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, Power Point, Publisher and Outlook.
    • Adept in using databases to create reports in tools like Business Objects, Crystal Reports, SAP, Google Analytics
    • Must have high comfort level working with data sets in Excel. Knowledge of statistical software a plus (SPSS, SAS, Minitab, etc.)
    • Ability to think creatively and analytically
    • Attention to detail and organization
    • Adept to working on deadlines and balancing multiple projects
    • Team player with a positive cooperative attitude
    • Self-motivated, self-starter able to work independently
