Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

Discover The Palm Beaches

Discover The Palm Beaches strives to cultivate a tourism destination that is reflective of its Community and where all visitors feel welcome.

Discover The Palm Beaches Statement on Racial Justice

The team at Discover The Palm Beaches has been reflecting on 2020 – one of the most challenging periods in recent history. From the events prior to and following the tragic death of George Floyd and the horrible injustice of other precious Black lives lost (i.e. Corey Jones, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Jonathan Price) - a list that is unacceptably too long. We are heartbroken and we are outraged.

Tourism is an industry built on diversity and equal opportunity and we need to do our part in the quest for racial justice in America. We must be unequivocal and proactive in our rejection of racism and discrimination in every form it occurs. At Discover The Palm Beaches, we celebrate diversity and foster a culture of inclusion, and will continue to embrace these principles in all that we do.

We are a business that promotes travel. Travel, in and of itself, is about exploration - both outwardly and internally, experiencing new cultures, enriching your mind, and more than anything, meeting new people. Travel brings people of different cultures and perspectives together. We, as an organization, bring people together. Many times, those cross-cultural experiences, and the realization of our shared humanity wherever we may be traveling, become the most memorable ones in our journeys.

Borrowing from a recent letter from black DMO leaders: “If our industry is going to emerge as a winner in the travel and tourism game, we encourage everyone to embrace the philosophy of the late professional tennis player, Althea Gibson, who in 1956 was the first Black to win a Grand Slam title. Her motto was: ‘A Loser says, “It is possible, but it is difficult.’ A winner says, ‘It is difficult, but it is possible’. We stand ready to do our part to make the possibility of a new, better, highly evolved, inclusive travel industry a reality in 2020 and the years to come”.

Hence, we stand as allies with our tourism and hospitality community and encourage residents and visitors alike to cherish and support diversity, inclusion and our many ethnic-owned businesses. These are our mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, extended family, neighbors, friends, and colleagues. It is vital that we continue to listen and learn, so that we can do better to come together toward a just society. We must continue to advocate to have all voices heard and respected. We are committed to do our part to take steps to be an example in our community. Together, we can and must do better. Racism has no place in this world.

We are also cognizant that issues and challenges related to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion go far beyond racial and ethnic discrimination. We know that a broad-based comprehensive effort must also consider the needs of those in the LGBTQ community, people with disabilities, Native Americans and many other ethnic groups that form part of our greater community. Equity and inclusion must become ingrained in everything we do.

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee

Discover The Palm Beaches has created and internal committee focused on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. The mission of its Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) committee is to foster a culture emblematic of these values – one that celebrates and affirms the value of people of every race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, age, socioeconomic status, ability, and more. The role of the EDI committee is a commitment to continue welcoming, respecting, listening, and evolving as a tourism destination to ensure that DTPB staff, business partners, industry leaders and the communities we serve in Palm Beach County all have a voice and are represented.

We will focus on ensuring a welcoming, nurturing, and inclusive community for all who work, live, and visit here.

We believe that the expertise, values, and perspectives of a diverse and inclusive organization are fundamental to expanding the reach and impact of our advocacy, marketing, and educational efforts.

Our focus areas will include:

  • Marketing, Content & Sales
  • Industry/Community Relations
  • Staffing/Recruitment
  • Culture/Communications
