Lead Staff Accountant

Discover the Palm Beaches is the official destination marketing organization for Palm Beach County and is charged with its marketing domestically and internationally as a premier leisure and meetings destination, thus driving economic development and impact in the community.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Lead Staff Accountant is a key position to ensure the Finance Department’s ability to provide impeccable customer service to Discover’s team, partners and vendors, it is meant to provide general accounting support in a broad range of areas and serves as an important foundational piece for the newly structured finance department. 
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This position focuses on accounts payable and general day to day accounting needs. Responsibilities include but not limited to:
 Support for Month End Close by preparing Balance Sheet reconciliations, Credit Card reconciliations, Bank Reconciliations and Journal Entries

  • Assist Director of Finance and VP Finance in Analysis of Budget, Forecast and Financial Statements, Payroll, Inventory, A/P and A/R
  • Support Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and Cashiering functions as needed
  • Purchasing support to other departments for certain promotional, office and miscellaneous items and maintain appropriate inventory of goods
  • Lead for expense reporting system including continual training to staff
  • Lead in updating Finance Manual including all processes and continues improvements for effeciencies
  • Maintains financial records and ensures that financial transactions are properly recorded. Ensures the accuracy of entries to ledger accounts and reconciles subsidiary ledger accounts to the general ledger.
  • Prepares complex balance sheets, financial statements and other financial reports. Analyzes current costs, revenues, financial commitments, and obligations incurred to predict future revenues and expenses
  • Any other duties that are necessary for the success of Discover’s Financial systems and team

 
QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE
The ideal candidate must have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities and deadlines.  Must be flexible and willing to do whatever is necessary to accomplish the department’s goals and meet the needs of the internal team, hospitality partners, other stakeholders and vendors. 
 
This position requires a degree in Accounting or Finance, or related degree, and a minimum of 3-5 years of “roll up your sleeves” accounting experience with a record of increased responsibility. 
 

  • Knowledge of GAAP and cash versus accrual accounting concepts
  • Strong accounting skills specifically Month End Close, GL, Balance Sheet, Bank and Credit Card Reconciliations, Accruals, Payroll, AP, AR and General Cashiering
  • Experience with Budget and Forecast preparation and analysis a plus
  • Experience in being integral part of Year End Audit from External Auditors
  • Experience working with 20+ million-dollar operating budget company
  • Ability to analyze issues and suggest solutions
  • Understanding of cash versus accrual accounting concepts
  • Experience in non-profit and county-based revenue set up a big plus
  • Detail oriented, conscientious, organized, flexible and reliable.
  • Proficient with Outlook, mid-advanced level Excel, Word and accounting and expense report software programs ideally Nexonia; Blackbaud software experience highly desirable.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Working conditions are normal for an office environment. Work for the Staff Accountant will not typically require monitoring and engagement on weekends and during the evenings.
