Hypoluxo

Home to the iconic “Barefoot Mailman,” Hypoluxo, Florida, is celebrated for its fascinating past and panoramic coastline along the Atlantic and Intracoastal Waterway.

Things to Do Nearby

This close-knit waterfront community — located halfway between West Palm Beach and Boca Raton — takes life at a slower pace. It’s no surprise: Tiny Hypoluxo is tucked on the shores of Florida’s scenic Intracoastal Waterway and just minutes from the sandy Atlantic Ocean coastline. See this south Florida area for its tropical natural beauty and boating opportunities. The lifestyle here is decidedly beachy.

Charter a 20-foot vessel with the Living on Island Time crew for a deep-sea drift-fishing experience you’ll be reminiscing about for years after. Catch finned and scaled big fishies like wahoo, mutton or yellowtail snapper, kingfish, mahi-mahi, amberjack, sailfish, blackfin tuna, grouper and more. You’ll dine like Poseidon on freshly caught seafood when it’s over.

See the Hypoluxo Hammock, a park near the Key West-style town hall, loved for its use of indigenous plants common to the area more than 100 years ago. Or head to the Hypoluxo Scrub Natural Area for a 14-foot-tall “Barefoot Mailman” statue honoring the brave mail carriers who once delivered correspondence to the area at great risk to themselves.

History

It’s hypothesized that Hypoluxo’s name comes from the Seminole name for Lake Worth, which was later renamed for Colonel William Jerkins Worth. The area was first settled in 1884.

Delivering the mail to Hypoluxo from Miami a century or more ago was no easy feat. Mailmen — then known as “barefoot mailmen” — trekked on foot and by boat and they battled the elements, including sharks and alligators, to faithfully deliver letters to its residents. The first formal town post office was established in 1886. Find out more about Hypoluxo’s barefoot mailmen >>
