See the Hypoluxo Hammock, a park near the Key West-style town hall, loved for its use of indigenous plants common to the area more than 100 years ago. Or head to the Hypoluxo Scrub Natural Area for a 14-foot-tall “Barefoot Mailman” statue honoring the brave mail carriers who once delivered correspondence to the area at great risk to themselves.

History

It’s hypothesized that Hypoluxo’s name comes from the Seminole name for Lake Worth, which was later renamed for Colonel William Jerkins Worth. The area was first settled in 1884.
 
Delivering the mail to Hypoluxo from Miami a century or more ago was no easy feat. Mailmen — then known as “barefoot mailmen” — trekked on foot and by boat and they battled the elements, including sharks and alligators, to faithfully deliver letters to its residents.
