Turtle Nesting Season

The month of May heralds the beginning of another season – sea turtle nesting season. Perhaps the area’s original tourists, Green, Leatherback, and Loggerhead Sea Turtles have been attracted for centuries to the pristine beaches that stretch between Jupiter and Boca Raton to lay their eggs. Humans, too, can marvel at this eco-wonder and understand the importance of co-existing with nature.

Between May and October, sea turtle encounters are available through dive adventures, guided nesting tours with wildlife experts and hands-on presentations at local animal sanctuaries. Here are just a sampling of turtle-tastic activities, events and excursions available during “The Season” in The Palm Beaches:

FBeach Cleanups at John D. MacArthur Beach State Park Join park rangers at John D. MacArthur Beach State Park for beach cleanups. Check out the park’s events caledar to see the dates.  

Gumbo Limbo

Gumbo Limbo Nature Center Turtle Walk & Hatchling Release Program Gumbo Limbo Nature Center’s Turtle Walk & Hatchling Release Program provides a fun, educational session about sea turtles. Begin in Gumbo Limbo’s classroom, then head out onto the beach for an ecology walk to view Loggerhead sea turtle nests. Ticket prices start at $17 per person.  

Loggerhead

Turtle Walks at Loggerhead Marinelife Center During the course of one evening, discover the fascinating life of a sea turtle. Take in an informative presentation about the ancient creature while experienced scouts of Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC) scan the beach for turtles. Once a turtle is found, the classroom is moved onto the sand to witness the egg-laying process. Prices for Turtle Walks are $17 per person with reservations. Walk-ins are at a flat rate of $20.  

MacArthur Beach State Park

Sea turtles are a precious treasure in The Palm Beaches. The key to preserving these creatures is to understand them and their needs. Learn what you can about the sea turtles life cycle and show them respect to ensure future generations can enjoy them as well.
