Recognition of Art by Women seriesbegan at the Norton in 2011in an efforttorecognize and promote living women artists through solo exhibitions, addressing the persistent inequity in exhibiting andacquiringart by women. Now in its 10thiteration and generouslyfunded bythe Leonard and Sophie Davis Fundand theMLDaurayArts Initiative, Recognition of Art by Women jumpstarted a new era of programming at the museum as a platform for solo shows byemergingand mid-career female artists. Featuring artwork by Jenny Saville, SylviaPlimackMangold, Phyllida Barlow, KlaraKristalova, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Svenja Deininger, Nina Chanel Abney, MaríaBerrío, and Rose B. Simpson,In Retrospectreflects the series’ impact, seizing the opportunity to present a group exhibition that illustrates the breadth of talent the series brought to light.Theexhibitionhighlightsthe work of nine artists who approach artmaking from diverse and distinct perspectives. This presentation showcasesa wide range of themes, and when viewed collectively, these nine artistsdemonstratethat mark-making is emotional, personal, and courageous.
