Greenacres

Known as Tree City USA, the verdant south Florida town of Greenacres is loved for its scenic public parks and family-friendly offerings.

It says a lot that National Arbor Day Foundation has bestowed Greenacres with an official Tree City USA designation consecutively since 1992. With 10 public parks in 6 square miles, the town is overflowing with tree-filled spaces.

In the central region of The Palm Beaches, Greenacres is northwest of Atlantis and west of Lake Worth. The Florida’s Turnpike runs only a few miles away from the city’s western edge.

Things to Do Nearby

Right on Greenacres’ western city limit sits one of The Palm Beaches’ most superb waterside open spaces. Okeeheelee Park is more than 1,700 acres and includes a nature center with hands-on exhibits, 8 miles of paved biking paths, hiking trails, fishing spots, water skiing, and a kid-friendly BMX track. It’s the on-site golf course and Jim Brandon Equestrian Center’s 9 miles of horse-friendly trails, however, that make Okeeheelee really stand out. Fun fact: The Okeeheelee Golf Course is set up as three nine-hole courses that can be played in multiple 18-hole combinations, making it ideal for every skill level.

Keep the green vibe going with a visit to Mounts Botanical Garden, West Palm Beach‘s oldest and largest public garden boasting exotic tropical plants, that’s just a 15-minute drive away.

Feeling hungry? Dine on Portuguese charcoal-grilled barbecue doused in tangy hot sauce at Iberia Bar & Grill, or Puerto Rican comfort food at Isla Del Coqui Restaurant. Doña Arepa serves authentic Venezuelan flavors like fried plantains and, you guessed it, arepas.

History

Greenacres was founded by Lawrence Carter Swain, who moved to the booming coastal area from Massachusetts in 1923 at a time when there were few homes available for the middle class — so he set out to change that. Known as a “Good Place to Live,” the new town was incorporated into Palm Beach County in 1926.
