Celebrating Sustainable Businesses in The Palm Beaches…
A sensory-friendly adventure where everyone can explore, learn, and play!

Looking for an exciting and inclusive adventure where everyone can explore, learn, and play? At Cox Science Center and Aquarium in West Palm Beach, discovery is for everyone! Whether you’re exploring interactive displays, enjoying quiet zones, or marveling at marine creatures up close, this welcoming environment makes learning fun and accessible for all.
For the past decade this has been one of my twins’ favorite places to visit in Palm Beach County – and no two visits are ever the same! From the tried and true favorite activities to the intriguing and ever-changing exhibits, there is always something for everyone and all abilities.
Visiting science centers can be incredibly beneficial for individuals on the autism spectrum, providing an engaging, hands-on learning environment that caters to diverse sensory needs and learning styles. These centers offer interactive exhibits that encourage exploration at one’s own pace, fostering curiosity and critical thinking in a low-pressure setting.
By offering a structured yet flexible environment, science centers help individuals on the autism spectrum develop social skills, build confidence, and engage in meaningful learning experiences that support both cognitive and emotional growth.
Now one of the things I love about the Cox Science Center is that they offer Sensory Saturdays on the 1st Saturday of each month. This is a great way to introduce a new activity to those on the autism spectrum or for those who have more sensory sensitivities.
They open for special exploration hours from 9 am – 10 am, specifically designed for families affected by autism spectrum disorder, sensory processing or cognitive challenges, or other guests requiring assistance for disabilities. This allows guests to experience their exhibits without heavy crowds before they open to the public at 10 am with softened general lighting, decreased noise level, and limited visual stimulation on interactive exhibits wherever possible.
The facility is also ADA accessible and wheelchair friendly! They also offer 50% off regular Science Center admission paid at the door and pre-registration is no longer required to reserve your spot in this special program.
For those who prefer to visit during regular operating hours, here are some helpful tips to plan your day.
For many of our children who are on the autism spectrum, activities become a pattern and the cost of admission really adds up over time. A Family Membership to the Science Center is the best value if you plan on visiting at least 2 times in a calendar year. And it also includes a free planetarium show for every visit, as well as discounts on admission to museums around the country.
And I love that they offer many discounted and free ticket options to ensure that everyone has equal access to enjoy the love of science!
If your family is receiving food assistance (SNAP or WIC benefits) – they offer $3 admission (per person) to the Science Center. Simply, present your SNAP or WIC EBT cards and ID to receive $3 admission for up to 4 people per card. Valid for general admission only. They also offer discounts for Military and First Responders and their families.
Parking is always FREE and there are numerous parking lots located around the Science Center.
As many of our children have significant food aversions – one of the best parts of the science center is that you can bring your own food in. Though please keep in mind that food is not permitted to be consumed inside. There are plenty of shaded picnic tables available outside on their Science Trail picnic area and patio.
And be sure to check out their weekly Food Trucks on the Trail every Friday-Sunday. Make sure to check ahead to see which food trucks will be on-site.
One of the best parts of visiting the Cox Science Center is the variety of experiences that are housed under one roof. This is especially beneficial for those sensory moments when your child is either overstimulated or sensory seeking – it allows you to adapt your activities to accommodate their unique sensory needs.
When we visit, we typically start in their featured exhibit. This area tends to be the most sensory stimulating, and tends to be the most crowded, so to balance the sensory input we follow that with a Planetarium show. There are many shows to choose from ranging from Dinosaurs to the Solar System but our all-time favorite is “One World. One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure” which is fun for all ages.
Planetarium shows are $5 per person, and is included with your membership. The Planetarium is perfect for taking a pause – small theater, low lights, relaxing program. The perfect balance before more interactive play.
They also have a variety of Science Shows and Demos throughout the day, which are included with admission.
From shadow play and hurricane simulators to hands-on interactive exhibits – there are a variety of activities throughout the science center to explore. These exhibits allow for self-paced engagement, reducing the pressure of social interaction while fostering curiosity and confidence. And there are exhibits for every sensory input featured throughout the science center. You can play in the sand tables or jump to connect brain synapses in the Human Brain exhibit or explore the various tactile sensory walls. There is always something new to see and do.
Our next favorite section is the aquarium. From sharks to alligators to turtles – this is a section you do not want to miss. There is even a 360-degree viewing tank, which is always a favorite! And makes for a great photo op!
And when you are done exploring inside – there is even more fun outside. From a splash pad to mini-golf, there is something for everyone. Visit with the dinosaurs on a quarter-mile scenic trail that includes a gem panning station, shark tooth dig, play on the giant xylophone, launch a rocket in the physics station, or simply relax in the grass by their amphitheater. With so many options to choose from – you can create a new adventure with every visit.
If this is your first visit, take a moment to explore their website and show your child this map to familiarize themselves with the science center before you arrive.
And if your child loves science and experiments. Be sure to check out their Virtual Science page. Click on “Stay at Home” STEM for a variety of science experiments categorized by age groups so you can keep the fun going at home!
And did you know that the Cox Science Center is expanding! Stay tuned to their website for exciting announcements as they enhance STEAM learning for all with a state of the art new facility and one of the largest aquariums in Florida coming soon!
So, come experience a place where curiosity knows no limits!
