Commissioner’s Corner

The Palm Beaches are more than just a world-class tourism destination— we are a collection of vibrant communities, each with its own stories, landmarks, and hidden gems.

Our Palm Beach County Commissioners play a vital role in shaping these communities and ensuring they remain welcoming and thriving for both residents and visitors. In this special series, we’re highlighting the leaders who help steward our county’s unique character.

Today, we’re featuring Palm Beach County Mayor Maria G. Marino, representing District 1, to share their personal connection to The Palm Beaches and what makes our destination so special.

Meet Mayor Maria G. Marino

I first came to Palm Beach County in 1985 to play golf – and I never left. With more than 140 golf courses, 47 miles of sparkling coastline, and a community alive with history, culture, and ideas, this place captured my heart and has kept it ever since.

Today, I’m proud to serve as Mayor of Palm Beach County and Commissioner for District 1, which spans Northern Palm Beach County. My journey here has been anything but ordinary: I’m a professional golfer and 30-year LPGA member, a retired nonprofit executive director, and a former real estate broker.  Known for my adventurous spirit, I’m not afraid to get my feet wet, my hands dirty, or even jump off a building to support our community.

What drives me most is helping others. I’ve dedicated my public service to championing sports and recreation, protecting and restoring our natural areas, and supporting projects like beach renourishment—so future generations can experience the same beauty, freedom, and adventure that define life in Palm Beach County.

I may not have been born here, but I am proudly a LOCAL—and I can’t wait to share why District 1 is the perfect destination for your next escape or to call home.

What Makes District 1 Unique?

District 1 is Palm Beach County’s crown jewel. It is where history, luxury, and world-class recreation come together seamlessly. From sun-drenched beaches to the lush landscapes of our parks and natural areas, every corner of District 1 tells a story of adventure, culture, and timeless beauty. Here, you’ll find:

District 1 is where refinement meets small-town warmth. It’s a community that invites exploration – whether you’re strolling along pristine beaches, enjoying world-class golf, savoring culinary delights, or discovering hidden pockets of natural beauty.

A Few of My Favorite Things to Do

It’s hard to narrow down favorites in a place that truly has it all, but these three experiences always remind me why I fell in love with District 1 / Northern Palm Beach County:

  1. Golf, Golf, Golf!
Palm Beach County is a golfer’s paradise, and District 1 sits at its heart. From world-class championship courses to serene, challenge-filled fairways, golf here is an experience for players of every level. The stunning landscapes, immaculate greens, and endless sunshine make every round unforgettable.
  1. Exploring Peanut Island
A true blend of history and adventure, Peanut Island is a must. It’s the site of President John F. Kennedy’s Cold War-era bunker, home to a former U.S. Coast Guard Station and boathouse, and some of the clearest waters in South Florida. Snorkelers, paddleboarders, and history buffs alike will find something unforgettable here.
  1. Dining
After a day in the sun, nothing beats indulging in the district’s extraordinary culinary scene. With hundreds of dining options (over 100 along PGA Boulevard alone), you can savor everything from fresh seafood to international flavors – all in settings ranging from casual waterfront charm to refined elegance.

What do you consider your district’s “hidden gem” that visitors might not know about?

The truth is, District 1 itself is a hidden gem – a rare corner of the world where history, world-class recreation, and unspoiled natural beauty come together in perfect harmony. Every trail, inlet, and coastline tells a story, inviting visitors to explore, relax, and reconnect with nature.

If there’s one spot that truly captures the spirit of this district, it’s DuBois Park. Located at the mouth of the Jupiter Inlet, the park is home to the DuBois Pioneer Home, built in 1898 and perched atop a shell mound created centuries ago by the Jeaga people. This remarkable site blends pioneer heritage with deep archaeological significance, and as you stand there overlooking the inlet, it’s easy to see why those who came before us chose this extraordinary place to live, work, and thrive.

Beyond its rich history, DuBois Park offers visitors a serene escape along the water. Kayak through calm inlets, stroll along the sandy shoreline, or simply soak in the view of the tranquil waters meeting the sky. It’s a place that connects the past with the present – and a perfect example of why District 1’s natural areas, beaches, and parks are treasures worth experiencing.

From world-class recreation and luxury dining to history-rich landmarks and serene beaches, District 1 is a destination that truly has it all. It’s where adventure meets elegance, where culture meets coastline, and where every resident and visitor can find their perfect Palm Beach escape.

Come see for yourself why I fell in love with this community – and why so many visitors keep coming back to discover more (and many like me stay).

From stunning beaches and cultural treasures to local flavors and hidden gems, each district in The Palm Beaches contributes to the rich tapestry of experiences that make our destination unforgettable.
