Inside Access: The Breakers

The Breakers is one of those iconic properties that luxury hotel lovers dream of. I recently paid a visit to this fabulous property and learned firsthand why The Breakers’ motto is ‘once you stay, you’ll understand.’

A trip to The Breakers Palm Beach is exactly what we all deserve this season, and my insider’s guide will help you make the most of your stay.

The History of The Breakers

Open since 1896, the hotel celebrated its 125th anniversary this year. Founded by Henry M. Flagler, The Breakers is proud of the fact that they are among an elite group of businesses that have been both open for over 100 years and are still owned by the original founding family. This sense of pride and heritage comes through in every detail at The Breakers. From the striking façade to the service to the quality of the guest rooms and dining facilities, The Breakers has stood the test of time in an industry that has faced changing fashions, lifestyles, and trends.

A Super Special Location

The Breakers enjoys the most prestigious address on Palm Beach Island and has been the place the local glitterati have gathered for over a century. And at just 20 minutes away from the Palm Beach International Airport, The Breakers is a convenient place for a cold-weather escape. On my recent trip to The Breakers for a holiday trip, I was impressed by how absolutely striking the drive up to the hotel is. Sure, I’ve seen the drive and the façade on social media a dozen times, but until you’ve done it yourself, you can’t get the full effect. I could immediately tell why people return year after year to this property—and it all begins with the first impression.

Accommodations at The Breakers

The best part about The Breakers is its proximity to the ocean. From nearly everywhere on the property you can either hear or see the Atlantic, and in many places, you can do both – I highly recommend booking an oceanfront room or suite. Waking up to the crashing waves and the sun beaming over the glistening ocean is one of the things that makes a stay in Palm Beach so special and memorable. Stepping out onto the balcony each morning to breathe in the fresh Atlantic air was an ideal way to start each day on my lovely getaway from the cold New England winter.

If you are coming to The Breakers with the whole family, I would also recommend one of their spacious suites. There are several levels of suites to choose from, but all offer spacious accommodations and plenty of room for everyone. And if you opt for a suite, you also get access to personalized concierge services so that your entire stay is customized to fit exactly what you have in mind for your family getaway. The Breakers’ website shows detailed descriptions of all their room types so you can make an informed decision as to which to book.

Delectable Resort Dining

The Breakers is one of those places that you really never need to leave during your stay. There is so much to do right on the property that you’ll be hard pressed to check off everything on the list before it’s time to go home. With 8 on-site eateries, and 2 a few blocks from the hotel, there’s plenty of depth and breadth when it comes to dining options.

Start the day at The Beach Club Restaurant for an oceanfront breakfast. I always opt for a leisurely breakfast during a warm-weather getaway, and The Beach Club is the place to do this at The Breakers. I was very impressed with the breakfast menu – the Acai Bowl was made to perfection and the pastries were as delicious as they were beautifully prepared. There was something for everyone, from sumptuous omelets to health-conscious avocado toast.

Guests have plenty of choices for lunch. They can either order at one of the restaurants by the beach or the pool, take a seat at Seafood Bar, enjoy a steak at Flagler Steakhouse or, for a fun bar and grill atmosphere, head into town to dine at The Breakers’ new offsite restaurant, Henry’s Palm Beach.

When the sun sets, the place to be is HMF. This is the main lounge and bar at the hotel, and this is where the-who’s-who of Palm Beach come to savor cocktails and bites. Be sure to snag a table so you can settle in for the evening and listen to music while enjoying your companions’ company and all the tasty concoctions coming out of the bar.

Endless Outdoor Recreation

Obviously, the name of the game at The Breakers is the water! With multiple pools and a large private beach, The Breakers offers ample opportunity to enjoy the sun and sand.

There are four separate pool areas, each with its own personality. No matter whether the kids want to play, you want to relax, or your spouse wants to exercise – there’s any idyllic spot for each of you. And if you want to enjoy all that Mother Nature offers, head to the beach and take a dip in the balmy waters of the southern Atlantic Ocean. You won’t go hungry wherever you go – there are dining options at all of the above!

After you enjoy a day at the beach, unwind further at The Breakers’ award-winning spa. Perhaps a relaxing massage or a rejuvenating facial is just what you need to complete your otherwise perfect winter getaway? The specialists at The Breakers Spa are there to help you feel calm and reset your glow!

And finally, if you want to stay outside and active on land, The Breakers is home to Florida’s oldest golf course and 10 tennis courts—so swing a club or racket and unwind in the way that suits you best in this warm and beautiful place.
