Fall is the perfect time to get out and appreciate America’s First Resort Destination™. The weather starts to cool down, but the winter influx of travelers hasn’t yet arrived. Local communities, attractions and accommodations are offering plenty of reasons and ways to enjoy this special season.

Downtown West Palm Beach is gearing up for a full slate of fall activities. The weekly GreenMarket, rated the top farmers market in the United States by USA TODAY 10Best, returns to the waterfront Great Lawn. It starts Saturday, Oct. 2, 2021, and will run through April 16, 2022, except for select dates in March due to the Palm Beach International Boat Show. Shop from among nearly 100 vendors selling fresh produce, exotic plants and flowers, herbs and spices, baked goods, gourmet and specialty foods, coffee, tea and much more.

Thursday night concert series Clematis by Night is showcasing free live music all autumn. Highlights include Countdown to Sunfest ’22 with three different musical acts (Sept. 23); Oktoberfest, featuring the Alex Meixner Band with “Polka King” Jan Lewan (Oct. 7); and special Halloween edition, Clematis by Fright, featuring costumes, family fun and music by The Spazmatics (Oct. 28). Countdown to Sunfest ’22 attendees who purchase a special TheClubVIP ticket will receive a premium spot close to the stage, unlimited popcorn and access to a private bar — and even better, a ticket to SunFest 2022.

Additionally, check out free, outdoor downtown West Palm Beach monthly events. Watch a movie on the Great Lawn at Screen on the Green the second Friday of each month from 6:30 to 10 p.m. During Sunday on the Waterfront, catch more live music the third Sunday of the month from 4 to 7 p.m. at Meyer Amphitheatre.

Just over the Intracoastal Waterway, iconic Palm Beach property The Chesterfield Palm Beach will host its Fall Afternoon Tea Sept. 1 to Nov. 30 from noon to 4 p.m. daily (excluding Thanksgiving Day). The fall menu includes an array of tea sandwiches from roasted chicken salad with chopped almonds and mayonnaise on white bread, to smoked Chilean salmon with dill cream cheese on brown bread, to egg salad with mayonnaise on marble rye. For the dessert lovers, there’s a chocolate financier, ride pudding with salted caramel, Key lime tart, pumpkin spice cannoli and cranberry scone with Devonshire cream and strawberry jam. Reservations are required for this elegant Palm Beach tradition. It costs $42 per person (plus tax and gratuity). Add on a special treat, the fall mimosa with sparkling wine and apple cider, for $12.

For a different kind of culinary experience, Due South Brewing Co. in Boynton Beach is celebrating its 10th annual Oktoberfest from Sept. 23 – 25. This local favorite craft brewer (and stop on the Ale Trail of The Palm Beaches) will feature special tappings of Oktoberfest beers, pints of Oktoberfest marzen lager, Bavarian-inspired food options from TMI Food Truck and pop-up craft shopping on Friday and Saturday. There’s plenty of room in this open, airy, warehouse-style space to spread out and enjoy the festivities with your friends and family.

Want to give back while enjoying stunning beach views and fresh air? Riviera Beach is inviting nature lovers to participate in the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup (ICC), the world’s largest, volunteer effort to clean up the marine environment. On Saturday, Sept. 18, volunteers will meet at Ocean Walk to help clean up Singer Island Beach. Registrations starts at 7:30 a.m., and the beach cleanup goes from 8 to 11:30 a.m. You can also register online.

Delray Beach’s Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens invites you to a variety of events throughout the fall. On Friday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6 p.m.), the museum will screen the Japanese film drama “True Mothers,” (subtitled in English). And on both Saturday, Oct. 23 and Saturday, Nov. 20, museums guests have three opportunities (noon, 1:30 and 3 p.m.) to experience Sado: The Way of Tea. Observe authentic Japanese sadō, an ever-changing demonstration with seasonal subtleties, and enjoy a sip of matcha green tea and a sweet treat.

On Saturday, Oct. 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., join the museum for kid-friendly fun during the Families Reading Together Kick-Off Event in partnership with the Palm Beach County Library System. Activities include a Great Book Giveaway, four unique Kamishibai Storytelling sessions and the Palm Beach County Bookmobile. This event is free with museum admission, and children who present a library card from any Palm Beach County library will receive free museum admission along with one accompanying adult. Also on Oct. 30 only, renew or purchase your annual membership in person at the Morikami and receive an extra month free.

On Friday, Nov. 5, combine wellness with learning by attending Humanized Naturalism: Japanese Gardens as Therapeutic Spaces, a lecture by Kendall Brown, professor of Asian Art History at California State University Long Beach. This virtual talk will be broadcast in the Morikami’s theater and explore the connection between Japanese gardens across North America and the core values of gardens in Japan, as well as how these natural yet social places allow us to connect more harmoniously with others. The talk will also highlight new practices, designs and locations for Japanese-style gardens.

The museum is also featuring several family-friendly virtual events including Orizuru for Peace on Saturday, Sept. 11, where families can learn to make their own Japanese paper cranes, and a traditional Fall Lantern workshop on Saturday, Oct. 9. On Thursday, Oct. 7, tune in for an installment of Mori Stories: Kamishibai Folktales featuring “The Mouse’s Wedding.” And on Saturday, Nov. 13, learn about the Japanese custom of searching for autumn leaves called Momijigari and how to make a momiji-shaped, maple leaf fan.
